The ASHP House of Delegates is the ultimate authority over ASHP professional policies, which express the Society's stance on important issues related to health-system pharmacy practice and medication use in society.

Georgia has three delegates who represent our state in the ASHP policy development proceess.

ASHP pharmacist members in Georgia were emailed a ballot on 1/7/2021.

Please note that voting will close on January 21, 2021 and the three (3) candidate receiving the most votes will be elected. A simple majority is required for election.

Thank you to our members for attending the Dec 3 CE program.   You attendance raised $500 for the Atlanta Food Bank.

Georgia Board of Pharmacy

Cecil Cordle has held various management positions in both retail chain and independent pharmacies - as well as in hospital settings - during more than thirty-five years of working in Georgia's pharmacy industry. He is a graduate of Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and currently employed by CVS Health. Cordle is a preceptor for the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and PCOM's School of Pharmacy. He is also a member of the Georgia Pharmacy Association and served on the 2016 Opioid Abuse Senate Committee. Originally from McDonough, he now lives in Tifton with his wife, Angie. They are members of Tifton First United Methodist Church and have three children.

Chuck Page has worked with The Kroger Company in pharmacy since 1986 and currently serves as the Director of Pharmacy for The Kroger Company in Atlanta. He graduated from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy in 1986. He and his wife, Chandra, live in Woodstock, and they have three children.

GSHP's mission is to help our members become better practitioners.  We work towards fulfilling our mission every year through education of our members via district meetings, statewide meetings, newsletters, and our website; fostering professional standards; educating the public about the role of health system pharmacists; monitoring legislative issues that affect pharmacy; and by promoting health system pharmacy as a career path for future pharmacists.  The majority of our Society's work is done by member volunteers working through our committees.  You can play a vital role by serving on one of our committees.  

1.    What will you get out of it?  

An opportunity to make yourself known by networking with other pharmacy leaders across the state and to give back to our profession.  In addition, it provides a venue for you to bring new ideas to the organization.  

2.      What is your commitment?  

It can be as little as giving your input during our upcoming virtual Committee Day on Saturday, January 9, 2021, participating in conference calls, or taking on specific assignments depending on your interests and time.   

GSHP has a variety of committees to meet your interests.  The following is a description of the functions of each committee.  If you are interested in serving on a committee for GSHP, please complete the link below:  

Committees will meet virtually on Saturday, January 9, 2021 from 9am to 11 am. If you cannot attend Committee Day, you can still serve on a committee. The Committee Chair will contact you regarding upcoming meetings or other opportunities to participate. 

COMMITTEE FUNCTIONS AND CHARGES: 
COMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL: The Communications Council and Editorial Board is responsible for the direction, development, and quality control of all GSHP publications, including the GSHP web site. 

EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Educational Affairs Committee is responsible for planning, coordinating, and evaluating educational content of the 3 statewide GSHP meetings.

INDUSTRY RELATIONS: The Industry Advisory Committee shall act as a liaison between GSHP and members of the pharmaceutical industry to further enhance relationships and foster an environment of mutual understanding through communication and feedback

LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS: The Legislative Committee is responsible for informing the GSHP membership and Board of Directors of important legislation and regulations and how they will impact pharmacy practice in organized health care settings in Georgia. 

ORGANIZATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Organizational Affairs Committee reviews and analyzes the GSHP organization and make recommendations to increase its effectiveness. It also serves as a liaison between GSHP and other professional organizations. 

PROFESSIONAL AFFAIRS: The Professional Affairs Committee provides recommendations to the Board of Directors on policies and actions to be taken by GSHP on issues of professional practice. 

PUBLIC RELATIONS: The Public Relations Committee provides the public with information and awareness of GSHP's mission and values through a variety of forums and media. GSHP's publics include, but are not limited to: patients/consumers and their families, industry, other healthcare professionals, organized healthcare executives, academia, pharmacists, technicians and other pharmacy support staff, and other pharmacy professional organizations. 

STUDENT and RESIDENTS COMMITTEE: The Student and Residents Committee provides input to GSHP on how to get students interested in health-system pharmacy practice and how to get them interested and involved in GSHP.

ASHP and its members have long been committed to eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and recognize the need to further strengthen that commitment following the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and other Black Americans. ASHP further seeks to help eliminate racism, discrimination, and inequities that impact other minority and underrepresented populations and to help improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare and society more broadly.

While the Task Force developed the preliminary recommendations with a specific focus on Black Americans, the Task Force members believe that many of the recommendations should also support other communities of color. In order to reflect more inclusive language within its recommendations, the Task Force decided to use the term “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color,” also referred to as BIPOC throughout the recommendations. Mental Health America (MHA) considers the following communities as BIPOC: Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Native and Indigenous, and Multiracial.

The deadline for this survey is December 10, 2020. Please be assured that your responses will be anonymous. The Task Force plans to review comments and prepare a final report and recommendations to the ASHP Board of Directors in January 2021.

GSHP was pleased to hold its third annual statewide Clinical Skills Competition (CSC) virtually on October 31. This event follows the local-level ASHP CSC held by each college of pharmacy in Georgia. The purpose of the GSHP CSC is to provide an opportunity for top college teams to 1) gain additional practice for the national ASHP competition, 2) receive feedback to help improve performance, and 3) determine a statewide champion for GSHP.

Competing teams from each school included: Urouge Akhtar and Shikha Patel from Mercer University, Patrick Barry and Miriam Bou from South University, Macy Biddulph and Nakoasha Dillard from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Zayd Ahmad and Steven Slack from the University of Georgia.

We would like to congratulate all competing teams for their outstanding performance! Our first-place team for the GSHP CSC was Zayd Ahmad and Steven Slack from UGA. Our second-place finalists were Macy Biddulph and Nakoasha Dillard from PCOM.    

Special thanks to our panel of judges: Ashley Burt (Archbold Memorial Hospital), Jolie Gallagher (Emory University Hospital), Ellen Huang (Augusta University Medical Center), Tara Koehler (Augusta University Medical Center), and Kayla Nichols (Emory University Hospital). The competition coordinator was Andrew Darley (UGA).

Congratulations to Essie Samuel, Michelle Vu and Angelle Newman who were the winners of the 2020 Trivia Contest.

The third week in October is designated to recognize the invaluable contributions pharmacy professionals make to patient care in numerous and varied ways.  This has certainly been an exceptional year for pharmacy, and it is now more important than ever to recognize the significance of the profession.  2020 has been a year of “firsts” for all of us as we continue to learn and adapt to pandemic life. 

As medication experts, we are leading the way as we establish safe and effective treatment protocols from new and ever-changing data.  We are brainstorming creative, unique ways to deliver medications, conserve PPE, and prioritize medications from a scare supply.  Some of us may have even been deployed to work on Covid-19 testing or planning for the upcoming vaccine distribution.  Many student and resident programs have had to quickly pivot to a virtual learning environment as everyone adapts to a new way of doing things. 

This year has provided unprecedented challenges for all of us and National Pharmacy Week is the perfect time to reflect on what we have accomplished.    In addition to the beloved and highly competitive trivia game, GSHP would like to celebrate your achievements as well.   We encourage you to share your shining moments from this year.  Please go to our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter page and share pictures or stories from your best 2020 moments with #pharmacyweek.

GSHP President 2020-2021

The Georgia State Board of Pharmacy has begun the online renewal process for pharmacists and nuclear pharmacists, which expire on December 31, 2020.  The online renewal process will facilitate the renewal of these licenses and provide ease and efficiency of renewal for both individual licensees and the staff of the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy.
