Heart-lung Interactions in Emergency Situations

Objectives for pharmacists              

(1) Discuss the mechanics of breathing and the role of pressure changes during inspiration and expiration

(2) Explain how positive pressure ventilation impacts cardiac function

(3) Analyze clinical scenarios where heart-lung interactions exist and may drive the choice of treatment

Objectives for pharmacy technicians 

(1) Describe the diffusion principle and the relationship between pressure and volume

(2) Recognize positive and negative pressure ventilation

(3) Describe the respiratory pump and its impact on the cardiac cycle

 

This is a knowledge based activity.  This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.

Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.   Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event.  Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time.  The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate completely in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.
