The Thick and Thin of It: Secretion Management in Clinical Practice

Pharmacist Objectives:

-          Define key components of respiratory secretions and mucociliary clearance

-          Explain the pathophysiology of impaired secretion clearance in patients with spinal cord injury

-          Compare pharmacologic and non–pharmacologic strategies for secretion management, including mechanisms of action and clinical roles

-          Recognize appropriate pharmacologic and non–pharmacologic strategies for secretion management based on patient–specific factors

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

o   Describe the key components of respiratory secretions and the role of mucociliary clearance in maintaining respiratory health.

o   Explain how spinal cord injury can impair secretion clearance and contribute to respiratory complications.

o   Differentiate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches used for secretion management, including their general mechanisms and purposes in care.

o   Identify factors that may influence selection of secretion management strategies in patients with impaired respiratory clearance.

This is a knowledge based activity.  This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.

Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.   Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event.  Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time.  The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate completely in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.

This is a member service of GSHP.  There is no charge for members to attend.  Dues must be current to receive CE credit.
