Hitting the Sweet Spot With the 2024 Update of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Guidelines on Glycemic Control for Critically Ill Adults

Pharmacist Objectives: 

  • Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical indicators for diagnosis of hyperglycemia in critically ill patients.
  • Identify key differences between the old 2012 and new 2024 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) guidelines for the treatment of hyperglycemia in critically ill adults.
  • Explain the methodology and grading of the updated guidelines.
  • Summarize the literature reviewed in the updated guidelines.
  • Discuss specific glucose levels that trigger insulin therapy.
  • Outline the frequency and methods of glucose monitoring.
  • Describe the features and benefits of explicit decision support tools and highlight the impact of these tools on patient outcomes and safety.

Technician Objectives:

  • Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical indicators for diagnosis of hyperglycemia in critically ill patients.
  • recite key differences between the old 2012 and new 2024 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) guidelines for the treatment of hyperglycemia in critically ill adults.
  • Discuss specific glucose levels that trigger insulin therapy.
  • Outline the frequency and methods of glucose monitoring.
  • Describe the features and benefits of explicit decision support tools and highlight the impact of these tools on patient outcomes and safety.

This is a knowledge based activity.  This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.

Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.   Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event.  Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time.  The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.
