What’s Shaking? An Update on the Management of Alcohol Withdrawal

Objectives:
Pharmacists:
· Differentiate between the various stages of acute alcohol withdrawal as well as describe how to diagnose alcohol use disorder (AUD).
· Interpret the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol, revised (CIWA-Ar) and Prediction of Alcohol Withdrawal Severity Scale (PAWSS) scores in a patient with acute alcohol withdrawal.
· Given a patient a case, evaluate risk factors, pharmacotherapy treatment, complications, and monitoring parameters in a patient with AUD.
· Analyze and compare guideline recommendations and Wellstar’s current protocol on the management of alcohol withdrawal.
Technicians:
· Differentiate between signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorder versus acute alcohol withdrawal.
· Compare treatment options available for acute alcohol withdrawal.
Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1 contact hour (0.1 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event. The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days.
