Osteoporosis and The Supplemental Perspective

Pharmacist Objectives:
- Describe the definition and pathophysiology of osteoporosis
- Identify current pharmacologic recommendations for the management of osteoporosis
- Evaluate the use of supplemental products in conjunction with pharmacologic therapy in the management of osteoporosis.
Pharmacy Technician Objectives:
o Define osteoporosis and recognize how the disease affects bone strength and fracture risk.
o Identify common medications used to prevent and treat osteoporosis, including their general uses and administration considerations.
o Describe the role of calcium, vitamin D, and other supplemental products used alongside osteoporosis medications.
o Recognize important counseling points and monitoring considerations related to osteoporosis therapies and supplements.
o Differentiate between pharmacologic therapies and supportive supplements used in osteoporosis management.
This is a knowledge based activity. This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.
Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event. Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time. The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate completely in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.
