Schizophrenia: A Pharmacy-Forward Approach to Treatment and Novel Therapies

Pharmacist Objectives:

1. Explain the pathophysiology of schizophrenia
2. Describe the differences between medications used in the treatment of schizophrenia
3. Recognize multiple treatment guidelines for schizophrenia
4. Identify novel medications used for schizophrenia and their places in therapy

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

o   Identify key features of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, including common neurotransmitters involved.

o   Recognize differences among medication classes used to treat schizophrenia, including typical vs. atypical antipsychotics and common side effects.

o   Describe general treatment approaches outlined in schizophrenia guidelines, including the role of oral and long-acting injectable therapies.

o   List newer and emerging medications for schizophrenia and recognize their general place in therapy.

o   Identify important medication safety and monitoring considerations associated with antipsychotic therapy (e.g., metabolic effects, adherence considerations).

This is a knowledge based activity.  This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.

Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.   Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 1.0 contact hours (0.10 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event.  Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time.  The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate completely in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.
