Tiny Hearts, Big Challenges: Vasoactive Therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Presenter:

Emily Davis, PharmD

PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Resident

Piedmont Columbus

Pharmacist Objectives:

• Define neonatal hypotension and understand the utility of other assessments of perfusion besides blood pressure
• Explain the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life and difficulties that can occur resulting in hemodynamic instability
• Analyze etiologies of hemodynamic instability in neonates and which vasoactive would be preferred

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

o   Define neonatal hypotension and identify common indicators of perfusion beyond blood pressure (e.g., urine output, capillary refill, lactate).

o   Describe the normal transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life and recognize factors that may lead to hemodynamic instability in neonates.

o   Identify common causes of hemodynamic instability in neonates (e.g., sepsis, hypovolemia, cardiac dysfunction).

o   Recognize commonly used vasoactive medications in neonatal care and describe their general purposes.

o   Identify basic monitoring and safety considerations associated with vasoactive therapies in neonatal patients.

This is a knowledge based activity.  This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in any setting.
