GSHP's mission is to help our members become better practitioners.  We work towards fulfilling our mission every year through education of our members via district meetings, statewide meetings, newsletters, and our website; fostering professional standards; educating the public about the role of health system pharmacists; monitoring legislative issues that affect pharmacy; and by promoting health system pharmacy as a career path for future pharmacists.  The majority of our Society's work is done by member volunteers working through our committees.  You can play a vital role by serving on one of our committees.

    1.    What will you get out of it?

An opportunity to make yourself known by networking with other pharmacy leaders across the state and to give back to our profession.  In addition, it provides a venue for you to bring new ideas to the organization.

    2.      What is your commitment?

It can be as little as giving your input during our upcoming virtual Committee Day on Saturday, January 9, 2021, participating in conference calls, or taking on specific assignments depending on your interests and time.

GSHP has a variety of committees to meet your interests.  The following is a description of the functions of each committee.  If you are interested in serving on a committee for GSHP, please complete the link below:

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/gshp2021committee

Committees will meet virtually on Saturday, January 9, 2021 from 9am to 11 am. If you cannot attend Committee Day, you can still serve on a committee. The Committee Chair will contact you regarding upcoming meetings or other opportunities to participate.

    COMMITTEE FUNCTIONS AND CHARGES:
COMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL: The Communications Council and Editorial Board is responsible for the direction, development, and quality control of all GSHP publications, including the GSHP web site.

EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Educational Affairs Committee is responsible for planning, coordinating, and evaluating educational content of the 3 statewide GSHP meetings.

INDUSTRY RELATIONS: The Industry Advisory Committee shall act as a liaison between GSHP and members of the pharmaceutical industry to further enhance relationships and foster an environment of mutual understanding through communication and feedback

LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS: The Legislative Committee is responsible for informing the GSHP membership and Board of Directors of important legislation and regulations and how they will impact pharmacy practice in organized health care settings in Georgia.

ORGANIZATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Organizational Affairs Committee reviews and analyzes the GSHP organization and make recommendations to increase its effectiveness. It also serves as a liaison between GSHP and other professional organizations.

PROFESSIONAL AFFAIRS: The Professional Affairs Committee provides recommendations to the Board of Directors on policies and actions to be taken by GSHP on issues of professional practice.

PUBLIC RELATIONS: The Public Relations Committee provides the public with information and awareness of GSHP's mission and values through a variety of forums and media. GSHP's publics include, but are not limited to: patients/consumers and their families, industry, other healthcare professionals, organized healthcare executives, academia, pharmacists, technicians and other pharmacy support staff, and other pharmacy professional organizations.

STUDENT and RESIDENTS COMMITTEE: The Student and Residents Committee provides input to GSHP on how to get students interested in health-system pharmacy practice and how to get them interested and involved in GSHP.

Students-please note that you can sign up to participate in ANY committee.

The ASHP Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion invite ASHP members to participate in an important member survey. The purpose of the survey is to collect feedback on the preliminary recommendations from the ASHP Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Please review the following information and then use the link below to access the survey which should take 15-20 minutes of your time to complete.

Follow this link to the Survey:  Recommendations Feedback

Or copy and paste the URL into your internet browser: http://ashp.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cVlZG58aKizkpbn?Q_DL=N3VcqY8mZkgoXsl_cVlZG58aKizkpbn_MLRP_cNLs8KJjPiZECfH&Q_CHL=email

ASHP and its members have long been committed to eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and recognize the need to further strengthen that commitment following the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and other Black Americans. ASHP further seeks to help eliminate racism, discrimination, and inequities that impact other minority and underrepresented populations and to help improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare and society more broadly.

While the Task Force developed the preliminary recommendations with a specific focus on Black Americans, the Task Force members believe that many of the recommendations should also support other communities of color. In order to reflect more inclusive language within its recommendations, the Task Force decided to use the term “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color,” also referred to as BIPOC throughout the recommendations. Mental Health America (MHA) considers the following communities as BIPOC: Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Native and Indigenous, and Multiracial.

The deadline for this survey is December 10, 2020. Please be assured that your responses will be anonymous. The Task Force plans to review comments and prepare a final report and recommendations to the ASHP Board of Directors in January 2021.

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

    Sincerely,

    Paul C. Walker, Pharm.D., FASHP
Task Force Chair and ASHP Board Liaison

GSHP was pleased to hold its third annual statewide Clinical Skills Competition (CSC) virtually on October 31. This event follows the local-level ASHP CSC held by each college of pharmacy in Georgia. The purpose of the GSHP CSC is to provide an opportunity for top college teams to 1) gain additional practice for the national ASHP competition, 2) receive feedback to help improve performance, and 3) determine a statewide champion for GSHP.

Competing teams from each school included: Urouge Akhtar and Shikha Patel from Mercer University, Patrick Barry and Miriam Bou from South University, Macy Biddulph and Nakoasha Dillard from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Zayd Ahmad and Steven Slack from the University of Georgia.

We would like to congratulate all competing teams for their outstanding performance! Our first-place team for the GSHP CSC was Zayd Ahmad and Steven Slack from UGA. Our second-place finalists were Macy Biddulph and Nakoasha Dillard from PCOM.

Special thanks to our panel of judges: Ashley Burt (Archbold Memorial Hospital), Jolie Gallagher (Emory University Hospital), Ellen Huang (Augusta University Medical Center), Tara Koehler (Augusta University Medical Center), and Kayla Nichols (Emory University Hospital). The competition coordinator was Andrew Darley (UGA).

Best of luck to all of our Georgia teams as they progress to the national competition at ASHP Midyear!

The third week in October is designated to recognize the invaluable contributions pharmacy professionals make to patient care in numerous and varied ways.  This has certainly been an exceptional year for pharmacy, and it is now more important than ever to recognize the significance of the profession.  2020 has been a year of “firsts” for all of us as we continue to learn and adapt to pandemic life.

As medication experts, we are leading the way as we establish safe and effective treatment protocols from new and ever-changing data.  We are brainstorming creative, unique ways to deliver medications, conserve PPE, and prioritize medications from a scare supply.  Some of us may have even been deployed to work on Covid-19 testing or planning for the upcoming vaccine distribution.  Many student and resident programs have had to quickly pivot to a virtual learning environment as everyone adapts to a new way of doing things.

This year has provided unprecedented challenges for all of us and National Pharmacy Week is the perfect time to reflect on what we have accomplished.    In addition to the beloved and highly competitive trivia game, GSHP would like to celebrate your achievements as well.   We encourage you to share your shining moments from this year.  Please go to our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter page and share pictures or stories from your best 2020 moments with #pharmacyweek.

Happy National Pharmacy Week to all of you.  Congratulations and thank you for all that you do to serve the people in your community.  I wish you a week filled with celebration and an upcoming year of new frontiers.

    Dear GSHP Members,

Today, October 12, 2020, is recognized as National Women Pharmacist Day to celebrate the advancement women have made pursuing careers in pharmacy.  This day was chosen during National Pharmacist Month in honor of the first female pharmacist, Elizabeth Gooking Greenleaf, who had 12 children and opened an apothecary in Boston in 1727.   While we celebrate the contributions of all women in pharmacy, I would like to take this opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of one of our members and past presidents, Leslie Jaggers, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP.  Dr. Jaggers was kind enough to give me a few minutes of her time to share her journey and thoughts regarding the role of women in pharmacy.

Dr. Jaggers has had a storied and diverse career path that began at the University of Georgia where she completed a B.S. degree in pharmacy as well as her Pharm.D.  She went on to complete a residency at the University of Kentucky in Clinical Practice.    Her career has taken her in numerous directions from Clinical Supervisor for Adult Medicine at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, to a Clinical Affairs Associate position with ASHP, to her 20 years of service as the Cardiovascular Clinical Pharmacist at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, the last 4 years with the Samsky Advanced Heart Failure Center.  Today, she is sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience through her current position as a Cardiovascular Field Medical Director at Pfizer.

She has also been actively involved in numerous pharmacy organizations at the local, state, and national level.   She has been a presidential officer for both the Georgia Society of Health System Pharmacists as well as the Atlanta Academy of Institutional Pharmacists.  She is a fellow of ASHP and has served on the ASHP Council for Therapeutics and House of Delegates.  She has been a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and was awarded the AAIP Pharmacist of the Year in 2009 and GSHP Pharmacist of the Year in 2018. She has been an integral part of shaping the future of many pharmacists as a pharmacy practice residency program director, preceptor, and adjunct clinical associate professor.

Dr. Jaggers believes that we have not had to look far to see the impact of women on the profession of pharmacy and will continue to see great progress in their contributions.  She has witnessed growth and opportunity over the course of her career and anticipates women will have a strong presence in pharmacy for years to come.   Dr. Jaggers acknowledged Sarah Mullis, RPh, former Director of Pharmacy at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, and Chris Sorkness, RPh, Pharm.D. from the University of Wisconsin as two specific examples of the many women who influenced her career in positive, but different ways.  Sarah embraced servant leadership and demonstrated what could be accomplished through leading by example.   Chris provided an academic framework with profound knowledge, a command of literature, credibility and outstanding communication skills.

I believe Dr. Jaggers has influenced, mentored, and served as a role model to many pharmacists as well.  I am proud and honored to highlight her story as we celebrate the important impact women have made on our profession.  Please check out #womenpharmacistday on your social media platforms to learn more and celebrate the progress made by women in pharmacy.

Effective October 1, 2020, Veklury (remdesivir) will no longer be allocated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and State Departments of Health. This change is possible given that there is now sufficient supply of Veklury (remdesivir) to meet demand, even if a surge of COVID-19 cases occurs.

Each year ASHP offers Student Societies of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHPs) nationwide the opportunity for official "ASHP-SSHP Recognition".  This honor recognizes the hard work of SSHPs throughout the academic year and further strengthens ASHP’s support and collaboration with local student pharmacist leaders.

Criteria for recognition encourage SSHP activities that:

    ·         Promote interest in membership and collaboration with local, state, and national health-system organizations

    ·         Cultivate career exploration, residency preparation, and professional development

    ·         Encourage students to engage with ASHP’s key initiatives, partners, and priorities

GSHP is pleased to announce that our four student chapters have earned official recognition from ASHP for 2020-2021. To view a complete list of these officially recognized SSHPs, please visit: https://www.ashp.org/Pharmacy-Student/Student-Societies/Find-a-Student-Society.
